BOSTON – On July 20, Gov. Maura Healey signed into law legislation filed by Senator John F. Keenan and Representative David DeCoste to rename Hanover’s principal executive governing body from “Board of Selectmen” to “Select Board.” The name-change, which originated with Hanover residents and officials and required approval by the Legislature, is intended to reflect a more inclusive approach to presenting government.
“Too often, we disregard the power of words. In a case like this, saying ‘Board of Selectmen’ may seem like a small detail to some, but in keeping that name what we are really doing is failing to the recognize the roles and identities of all its members,” said Sen. Keenan. “We want everyone to feel welcome and equal in the government process and to appropriately recognize the contributions of all. We already have ungendered terms like city council, school committee, and zoning board, so this is a logical, fair extension of that manner of naming a governmental body.”
S.1302, An Act changing the Board of Selectmen of the Town of Hanover to a Select Board was filed by Sen. Keenan and Rep. David DeCoste this session on behalf of local officials and community members who advocated for changing the board’s name.
“Two summers ago, Hanover Middle School student, Ms. Corrine Crissinger, approached the Board during a public meeting and argued persuasively that the title Select Board was a more appropriate, inclusive term compared to Board of Selectmen. Thanks to her courage and efforts, the legislation was brought before Hanover voters at the 2022 Annual Town Meeting,” said Hanover Select Board Member Rhonda Nyman. “Voters unanimously approved the name change. I’m so proud of what Corrine accomplished at such a young age. Our future is bright knowing we have young people like Corrine leading the way.”
State Representative David DeCoste, who filed the House version of the legislaiton, said “We are grateful for the House and Senate leadership and especially the work of Senator Keenan and his staff to move along this legislation.”
Hanover’s executive governing board will be officially referred to as the “Select Board” effective immediately.
